When reflecting on the last four weeks, it is hard to believe how quickly the school terms and weeks have passed by, and how much has been achieved during this time.
This term, our newly implemented Year 7 Aspire class, our Access, Connection and Engagement (ACE) program, and our Professional Support Team’s Alternate Learning Programs (ALPs) have provided students with a considerable number of learning opportunities, which are targeted at supporting individual student needs. At Parklands, we view student learning as a multi-layered approach that supports students both academically, socially and emotionally. Student learning is personalised and focused on achieving a diverse range of student specific goals. In these programs, students are fortunate to be able to access a wide range of staff skill sets, which range from (but are not limited to) our police in schools person Kellie Little, our school psychologist Penelope Cooper and the expertise of Leisa Gates our QuickSmart Maths coordinator. We are incredibly lucky to have such a committed and diverse range of staff at Parklands, who consistently go above and beyond to support our students to be the best possible versions of themselves.
As staff, our focus over the course of this year has very much been on student learning outcomes and finding ways we can improve our practice to support student learning and wellbeing here at Parklands. Our recent External School Review plays an integral role in providing us with key understandings from interviews with our students, staff and community members about areas we are excelling in and importantly, providing us with feedback on areas we can nurture and grow. As a result of the review, Parklands staff will be continuing to focus on ensuring all student learning opportunities are rigorous, engaging and approached with a growth mindset; deepening our understanding of teaching and learning strategies to support student outcomes and refine our collaborative meeting practices to ensure we are effective in meeting the needs of all students. We would like to sincerely thank our Parklands community for welcoming school leaders from across the state into our school to conduct the review and for sharing your ideas and providing open and honest feedback. Our school community will have an additional opportunity to provide feedback via our School Satisfaction Survey between August 23 – September 17 – stay tuned!
Our Year 9 students recently participated in the Department of Education (DoE) endorsed program Speak Up, Stay Chatty. This program aspires to promote positive mental wellbeing by reducing the stigma associated with mental health related issues and encouraging people to seek help and provide support to others. We would like to acknowledge the efforts of Jamie Hughes and Giovanna Simpson for coordinating the program and most importantly, supporting students to deepen their understanding of positive mental health strategies.
Positive health and wellbeing amongst students can often be directly related to a student’s level of connectedness to school and the positive and meaningful relationships they are able to develop. On Friday, August 27, our Health and Physical Education staff will coordinate and provide our students with the opportunity to participate in our annual Winter Wellbeing Day. This event enables students to select from a range of engaging activities, take a break from academic rigour, connect with their peers and most importantly, have some fun. We are looking forward to enjoying the exciting range of activities with our students and we look forward to sharing our experiences with our Parklands community via Facebook on the day.
As we soar past the halfway point in the school year, it is a timely reminder for students, staff and members of our community, to take the opportunity to reflect on personal goals we have set, our achievements and the areas we have demonstrated growth in and are yet to grow. It is now time to prioritise the remainder of Term 3 and 4 and plan for the next steps in our learning journeys by continuing to maintain high expectations of ourselves and those around us.

2021 School Satisfaction Surveys
Communication to Parents - Satisfaction Survey 2021
2021 School Satisfaction Surveys
Each year the Department of Education conducts school satisfaction surveys in Tasmanian Government schools, to gain feedback on what you think our schools do well and where you think we might improve.
We encourage you to complete the survey about Parklands High School; your feedback is very important to help us inform our school planning and decision-making.
The survey will open on 23 August and close on 17 September.
The link to the survey will be provided via Schoolzine and will be emailed to families not accessing the Schoolzine app. Email can be accessed via any device with an internet connection, including mobile phones.

Year 11 and 12 student reports are being issued on August 13 to provide parents and carers with an indication of how students are progressing in their subject choices. For each subject your child is enrolled in, they will receive indicative ratings for subject criteria or units of competency that have been assessed, ratings for work qualities associated with how your child is engaging in the learning process, and comments that provide feedback and indicate how your child can improve their learning.
Parent/student/teacher interviews for both shared and fulltime enrolments with Parklands High School will be conducted on Tuesday August 24 from 3pm - 5pm. If you would like to book a phone interview with your son/daughter’s teacher, please complete and return the form included with the report. Alternatively, you can contact the school on 64640600.
Year 10 Transition to Year 11 in 2022
By staying at school until the end of Year 12, students increase their life chances considerably. The Education Act 2016 has made it a requirement for all students to continue their education until they finish Year 12, achieve a Certificate III, or they turn 18 – unless they have an exemption.
The extension of Years 11 and 12 into all high schools in the North West Coast provides students with the opportunity to choose a course of study that meets their learning needs and career goals in a place that works best for them.
Our Year 10 students have already spent time considering their options for 2022. This has included exploring study and course options across the Hellyer Regional Collective. All students have received a copy of the Hellyer College Student Information Guide 2022. College staff have also conducted information sessions outlining course options for 2022 with our students.
The remaining steps in the Transition Program are outlined below:
- A Taste of Years 11 & 12 Day will be held at Hellyer College on Friday 20, August. Students have already selected four classes they would like to sample on this day.
Schools will transport students to and from Hellyer College on this day and they will be required to wear their school uniform.
The Hellyer College Café will be open for morning tea, and pizza will be provided free of charge at lunch time. Students are still encouraged to bring some refreshments with them for the day.

- Due to Public Health restrictions on the number of adults who can be on school sites, Hellyer College is hosting a VIRTUAL Parent Information Sessions on their website https://www.hellyercollege.education.tas.edu.au from Wednesday, August 18th. This will allow parents and students to explore all, or some of the following, from the comfort of their homes.
- Welcome videos from Hellyer College’s Principal, Judy Fahey and Nikki Clark, Principal of Smithton High School, on behalf of the Hellyer Regional Collective.
- Videos showing: a Day at Hellyer College, the Hellyer Regional Collective and Learning Area subject overviews.
- Videos outlining Student Support at Hellyer College, the TCE and ATAR requirements.
- The Hellyer Student Information Guide 2022 and individual subject flyers.
- Information about the Hellyer College Student Residence.
- Hellyer College staff will visit our school on Monday 6, September from 3:30pm - 6:15pm for personalised course counselling with you and your child. Please book a time for the interviews via - https://parklandshs.schoolzineplus.com/Year10.Course.Counsellor.Interviews
- Parents/carers who would like a tour of Hellyer College have the option of booking a small group tour of the College on the following dates.
- Tuesday 22, or Thursday 24, September at either 3.15pm, 3.45pm, 4.30pm, 5.00pm
- Tuesday 13, or Thursday 15, October at either 3.15pm, 3.45pm, 4.30pm, 5.00pm
- Due to Public Health restrictions on the number of adults who can be on school sites, Hellyer College is hosting a VIRTUAL Parent Information Sessions on their website https://www.hellyercollege.education.tas.edu.au from Wednesday, August 18th. This will allow parents and students to explore all, or some of the following, from the comfort of their homes.
These tours can be booked via the Hellyer College office on 6435 5200.
-
- Hellyer College will host an Orientation Day for 2022 students on Thursday, December 2.
We will be working with Hellyer College and other extension high schools to make sure that students who require additional information, or more support to make their transition, receive the personalised attention they require.
Franklin Wells
Hi, my name is Franklin, however, my friends call me Frank, Frankie or Frankenstein. I have been attending Parklands for two weeks (woof). Parklands is a great place, I have lots of fun. The people at Parklands make it a fun place to be. I have made lots of new friends. Xavier, Skye, Taya, Georgia and Amali are always nice to me and take me for walks. I have also been very lucky to learn lots of cool stuff. I know how to find the circumference of a circle, paint pictures in Art, learn where countries are in Geography, and ways to increase my wellbeing in Health, all by being a metacognitive thinker (woof).
Finally, the staff at Parklands are awesome. Mrs Munday helps me avoid the spray, Mr Frankcombe is as cool as his name (because it is similar to mine), Ms Venn is a legend and Ms Wescombe always makes me feel welcome. There is only one tool, Mr Wells! He stinks.

On Wednesday August 25, the Student Leadership Group will be holding our annual Healthy Living Day. Students are welcome to wear their favourite active wear providing they bring a gold coin donation. Yogurt and fruit salad will be available for purchase at recess for $2.00. During lunch time there will be a Leaders vs Teachers dodgeball match in the gym; everyone is welcome to watch!
