Year 7 HIVE Excursion

Year 7 Hive Excursion

This week year 7 students had the absolute privilege of visiting the Hive Cultural and community centre and experience several amazing activities. The most exciting was the cinematic experience provided by the planetarium and the incredibly documentary and tour of our galaxy from Astronomer Martin George. This was a BIG hit with students and was enthralling for staff and students alike. On the day we divided into 3 groups, one group starting at the planetarium; one at the Hive Museum and science gallery where they created and designed aerodynamic (and stylish) cars that could withstand – and complete- a special UTAS designed racecourse; and the other exploring the facilities at the Hive and having a well-deserved lunch break on the lawns or KFC.

Some of the highlights of the day are below:

  • “We drove from Parklands to Ulverstone and then we were split into 3 groups and went to 3 different options which were lunch at KFC, the Planetarium show about the Sun, and the Science Museum where we made and raced cars and did other interactive activities like making a boat from paper and watching a beehive be built.” – Baily Grace
  • “The Planetarium was cool, but Kaleb Cock fell asleep.” – Angus Knight
  • “I brought the most KFC out of the whole grade -a Zinger box upsized, and 10 Wicked Wings.” – Oliver Ebdon
  • “We made race cars for a track designed by the University of Tasmania.” – Baily Grace
  • “I won the car race!” - Mataya Dunham;”
  • “Is that the Sydney Opera House?!” – Kallie, on arrival to Ulverstone
  • “Can I have one of these in my room?” several students in the planetarium

An absolute HUGE thank you to Mr Hickman and Mrs Sushames for organising this incredible experience. Thank you to the Hive Ulverstone and your team for hosting us and giving us a great insight into the wide world (and beyond) of science. To Steffi, Lauren, Erryn, Mr Wells and Mrs Kerr – thank you for your support on this trip. And last but certainly not least – THANK YOU and well done to the year 7’s who were fantastic and made the trip so wonderful for all. We can’t wait to visit again!
