Youth Week Art Project

Youth Week Art Project

From the 3 - 5 May, eight students including myself had the privilege to experience graffiti street art first-hand as part of the Youth Week celebrations. On the second day (Tuesday), Rachel, Milan and I started the journey early in the morning. Leaving around 9 o’clock with Mr Smit (who wasn’t very chatty haha). We arrived shortly after very eager to start. We were introduced to Damien Rossiter AKA Gadget who is a professional mural artist. We wasted no time at all. We were into it; Gadget showed us all our materials and tools we needed, this included a variety of spray paint colours, different spray caps and gloves and a face mask for safety. To get used to our new tools we were able to practise on one of the sectioned walls, while Gadget gave us lots of tips and tricks in aiding us while also helping some of the less arty students (me) with how to draw and sketch. We then moved onto our murals. Gadget helped sketch up the base of the character which we then were able to use our newfound skills to fill in and colour these amazing characters. They were all looking great once the colour was down. Gadget then helped us with the outline which then really made the characters pop to life. After getting our first character down we then started some new ones. Gadget was really helpful and friendly. We got to find out all about his history in art and design. We were very productive completing multiple characters like the BFG, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, the Hunger Games logo and a few others. We also helped with a little more of the background. Overall the day was awesome and a great learning experience. We had a lot to take away from this experience.
