Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS)

During Term 2, Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS) will be facilitating sexual harm prevention and ethical sexual decision-making workshops for
Years 9-10. Classes commence the week beginning June 7 and run for 3 weeks.

The aims of the program are to raise awareness of the underlying causes and harmful impacts of family violence and different types of sexual violence, and reduce the incidence of these by promoting respectful behaviours amongst young people. Student, staff, and community workshops are intended to boost the capacity of school communities to respond to reports and disclosures of sexual assault.

Student sessions will include:

  • Ethical sexual decision making
  • Bystander behaviour and social change
  • Informed Consent education
  • Pornography versus intimacy
  • Understanding sexual abuse and harassment in the interests of prevention

The workshops align with elements of the Health and Physical Education curriculum and the National Curriculum General Capabilities, Personal & Social Understanding & Ethical Understanding. The proposed project also contributes to Outcome 2 (‘Relationships are respectful’) of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and Children, and specifically Strategy 2.1 – ‘Build on young people’s capacity to develop respectful relationships’, which recognises that education plays a key role in equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to develop and maintain non‐violent, respectful and equitable relationships.[i]

Parents and carers are invited to an information session on Wednesday, June 9 at 5:00pm in the Performing Arts Centre.

If you have any questions about the program, or wish to RSVP for this session please contact the school on 64640600.
