This term has been a positive one at Parklands. Throughout Term 3, we have seen so many members of our school community achieve their goals through having high expectations of themselves and taking responsibility for their actions. Again, the one most pleasing aspect to Parklands is the diverse range of strengths and interests across our school.
The first item I would like to speak to is our preliminary NAPLAN results. NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. Our interim results show improved gains in reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. We are excited about these results and throughout Term 4, we will interrogate the results to consolidate what we are doing well and what will be a our future focus areas.
Our Student Leadership Group, with the support of Mr Hughes, continue to grow and provide our school with many memorable moments. Their recent work at our last assembly was ultra-professional and showed how far they have come with their public speaking. The leaders have also been organising days and activities to support positive wellbeing through the Wellbeing Day and the R U OK day. It is exciting for Burnie to see such a motivated group of students supporting others.
During this term, students in all grades have participated in learning activities to support them to think and plan for their futures. Our Grade 7 students have been working with the Smith Foundation on a program called Entrepreneurs, the Grade 8’s have worked with the Beacon Foundation with the Step-Up Program and our Grade 9’s have learnt off the JCP Youth Empowerment Team. These fantastic and exiting learning opportunities would not go ahead, without our hardworking Grade Leaders. We thank them for supporting our students, but also bringing in these exciting opportunities to support career and life planning.
Alongside the career activities Parklands has continued its strong work with school transitions. Our Grade 10’s have been to Hellyer, participated in further course planning and had their enrolment at Parklands. The cohort needs a massive pat on the back. This is time can be challenging for some, and the attitude of our students when off-site at Hellyer, working with staff here and being present for their enrolment meeting was really positive. Mrs and Mr Crawford should feel proud of their efforts supporting the Grade with this process.
Recently, at a Parklands Collective meeting with our feeder primary schools the Grade 6-7 transition was raised, and we were happy to receive some positive feedback on how the program has improved this year. We want to thank our feeder schools, Montello, Ridgley, Havenview and Romaine. These schools are always willing to help Parklands and invest so much time with their students on the transition to high school. Mrs Devlin and Mr Hall have been working with the Grade 6’s here at Parklands and their feeder schools. This has supported the school to get to know the Year 6 students as people and learners. We are very excited to welcome them in 2022. Another aspect of the Parklands Collective that has been exciting, has been the schools' visits, each to learn off another. Teachers have been able to watch lessons and speak to students about strategies and activities that support their learning.
Throughout this term, there have been many fun activities. One of the highlights was the Grade 7 camp/sleepover. In a time where school camps have been challenging to plan, it was excellent to see this opportunity. It was a fun night with a range of activities. A big shout out to Mr Hampton and the Grade 7 staff for giving up their Friday night and Saturday morning. Many of these teachers have families and we appreciate the care they have for the school.
A big message to pass on to the school community is about our hardworking and caring Principal. Mrs Dudley will be taking leave in Term 4. This leave is extremely well deserved. Unfortunately, the recent COVID situation has changed Mrs Dudley’s interstate plans, but we know she will be able to spend this time with her family doing exciting things at home and across our state. Mrs Dudley needs to be recognised for her consistent level of high expectations at Parklands and we know that after spending some time with her family, these will continue throughout 2022 and beyond. Personally, and on behalf of the school, I would like to say “thanks Magella!”

About 4 months ago, the idea was brought to our attention that people were wanting to wear beanies as it was cold, wet, and the beginning of Winter. By having a school beanie, we thought people would not get in trouble for wearing beanies that were not part of our uniform. By wearing the customised beanies, students would be representing Parklands High and this could be worn as an official part of the school uniform. We started by writing up a petition for our fellow students and staff members to sign if they agreed that the school should bring in customised Parklands High beanies.
We then arranged a meeting with Mrs Dudley, so that we could talk about our ideas. Once the meeting was organised, we created a presentation of our strategies and designs. From there we had to put our heads together and figure out what company we wanted to style the beanies for us; we also had to pick the company that offered the best prices. The next step of the process was the campaigning and ordering. We also had to discuss the prices of the different companies that were offering to manufacture them and how and where we would get money to pay for them. That’s when we came up with the idea of pre-ordering from staff and students so that we received the money up front. The pre-ordering allowed us to gain the money we needed for us to order them in from the manufacturers.
Once all the hard work was done, all we had to do was wait for them to be crafted and delivered. This took a few weeks but when they did arrive, people were over the moon to be receiving their new Parklands High beanies.

Here at Parklands we have begun a whole grade reading program for Year 7. An online library of over 5000 books called MyOn Reading is being used across the school but especially in Year 7. Students have two dedicated reading blocks a week. In the photograph you can see Mrs Smith’s class ‘snuggled up in front of a virtual fire’ on the smartboard as they are happily immersed in their reading. Well done Year 7.
Students can access their online library from home using this link and their login details.

Grade 7 Sleepover
By Piper Wickham and Kelcie Brydon
On Friday September 3, the Year 7 group had a sleepover at school. When we first arrived, the girls set up their beds in B Block and the boys set up their beds in F Block. Then the student leaders cooked a BBQ for our dinner while the boys fed the calves. After that we had some chill time; some people did Just Dance. some sat and talked while we waited to do activities. When we went over to the PAC, we had a range of stuff to do. We had upside down 9 square, checkers, twister, and Just Dance. Most people chose to play 9 square because it was awesome. After doing activities we watched Space Jam 2. Halfway through the movie we had the opportunity to get up and have a feast of snacks from, chocolates, to chips and fruit. When the movie had finished we headed back to where we were sleeping and got our phones out to text our parents and let them know we were ok. We then headed to bed. In the morning, we all got up and went to the cafeteria to have some breakfast and the girls fed the cows. Once we had breakfast, we had to pack up and went to the gym to play so some more activities while we waited for out parents to pick us up.

2021 School Satisfaction Surveys
Communication to Parents - Satisfaction Survey 2021
2021 School Satisfaction Surveys
Each year the Department of Education conducts school satisfaction surveys in Tasmanian Government schools, to gain feedback on what you think our schools do well and where you think we might improve.
We encourage you to complete the survey about Parklands High School; your feedback is very important to help us inform our school planning and decision-making.
The survey will open on 23 August and close on 17 September.

The link to the survey will be provided via Schoolzine and will be emailed to families not accessing the Schoolzine app. Email can be accessed via any device with an internet connection, including mobile phones.
Why is school attendance so important?
Attending school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students are provided with opportunities to learn at school each day and can connect and build relationships with others in a social setting. Attending and participating in all aspects of school life will help your child develop:
- important skills and knowledge to help them learn and grow
- social and emotional skills such as communication, resilience and teamwork
Children who attend school every day and complete Year 12 are more likely to have:
- improved overall health and wellbeing
- a wider range of job opportunities
- job opportunities with higher income
It is important to remember that there is no safe number of school days to miss - each day your child is absent can impact on learning, student connectedness, and a student’s overall sense of school belonging.
What do I do if my child is unable to attend school?
Contact the school office as soon as possible and explain why your child is unable to attend school. This can be done by phone, text, email or a note explaining the absences upon your child’s return to school.
If contact is not made – a text message will be sent home to remind parents to contact the school.
After 5 days of absence, your child’s Year Coordinator may request a medical certificate to explain your child’s absences.
Please contact your child’s Year Coordinator if your child is required to take an extended period away from school or you are having difficulty with your child attending regularly - there may be alternate options to support your child’s engagement in their learning.
If you have any additional questions regarding attendance, please contact the school on 6464 0600.

"What helps us be the best people we can be"
I have always looked to others for inspiration. My friends and family have always been my biggest supporters and their guidance has formed a significant part of my personal journey. I also believe that it is vitally important to maintain a global perspective. We are all part of the world community and we are all diverse individuals. What is most important in life is to just be kind. Understand that everybody is different and that we are all constantly evolving and learning. We should never lose sight of that.
Jon Lewis
Year 9/10 Teacher
When life throws you a rainy day – play in the puddles’ (Piglet, Winnie the Pooh)
We only get to live each day once - so however many days you might have don’t let any of them be a bad day. The thing you can ALWAYS control is your reaction to events – you can control your attitude, and choose to be positive, kind, brave – whatever.
And we don’t know how many days anyone else has either – so the last thing we want to happen is never being able to make up to someone because we were unkind or selfish.
Oh. And if you’re lucky enough to live by the sea…you’re lucky enough.

On Friday August 13, ACE students ventured to Kart Magic in Latrobe.
Although some of the students started out a bit nervous and hesitant, with the support of their peers nearly everyone jumped into a kart and had a red hot go. We saw a tight race between Xavier Brown, Chevvy Fraser and Kade Schuman in the first heat, with Zander Brown taking the opposite approach and being stuck at the slow speed for the duration, although this certainly didn’t stop his ripper sense of humour, with a smile and wave each (very slow) lap. Nic Dobson gave the others a run for their money, and absolutely won the most thumbs as he went past supporting onlookers. Ryan Clark manned the pits and was ready to be back up driver if needed!
With our very own Kart superstar, Tayah Sheppard in the second heat we thought the title would be taken out! However, it was Piper Leslie and Jordan Jackson who were neck and neck for the win. Hot on their tails were Lilly Dolting and Emma Fraser, who were both a little concerned about operating the karts to begin with but ended with the pedal to the metal!
All the students had a lot of fun, were respectful, represented the school in a wonderful manner, showed support and encouragement for one and other and created a positive memory for our first excursion as the whole ACE program. We look forward to sharing our Montezuma Falls hiking experience in the near future.
Mind, Body and Soul ACE Program
This all girls group, meets every Wednesday in Blocks 3 and 4. We focus on building friendships, learning how to relax our mind, love our body, and reach out to our soul. We make sure that we are mindful to ourself and keep tabs on our mental health, whilst learning to be confident and kind to our mind, our body, and our souls.
This term we have been working on creating journals, doing some arts and crafts and we have even had fun creating friendships with board games and jigsaws! The funniest and loudest game to date has been the ‘hungry hippo’ game!
Last week we did an art project called ‘Found People’, which is a collage activity. We had to use magazines to find all the parts of a person, cut them out and then arrange all the body parts to create a new human! We then glued them onto paper and can put them in our journals. See the photo below of some of our creations!
We have also been working on some printed canvases that we can colour in and take home. Colour Canvassing is a great way to relax the mind and find a peaceful mindset using colours. Doing these activities also creates conversations between students and we laugh a lot and share stories at the same time! These are some of the Canvases we are currently working on.
